Deborah Spalding is Managing Director and co-Chief Investment Officer at Commonfund, an investment manager for endowments, foundations, and other nonprofit institutions. Prior to that, Spalding was the Chief Investment Officer of the State of Connecticut’s $30 billion Retirement Plans and Trust Funds. Before joining the Office of the State Treasurer, Spalding co-founded Working Lands Investment Partners, LLC, of New Haven, an independent investment management firm that invests in rapidly growing environmental markets for wetlands mitigation credits, water quality and quantity instruments, habitat banking, and carbon. Previously, she was Executive Director and Head of International investments for Schroder Investment Management NA. Before that, she worked at Scudder Kemper Investments as Managing Director/Head of International Institutional Investments. She began her career as a financial analyst at SKB & Associates in San Francisco, responsible for the electric utilities, food, and building materials industries. Deborah is currently an Independent Board Member at Resource Management Service, an Alabama based timberland investment manager, and serves on the Advisory Board of the Center for Business and the Environment at Yale. Other board roles Deborah has held include the National Wildlife Federation, where she was Board Chair, the Connecticut Forest & Park Association, the Robert & Patricia Switzer Foundation, and the Green Century Funds.
