Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

ESCLogo
The ESC is continually looking for projects to reduce campus energy use. Projects include identifying appliances for energy efficiency upgrades, tweaking operations to improve energy use, and engaging students, faculty and staff to join in efforts for energy conservation.

Past examples of initiatives include:
Initative Results
Using Modlets to track energy use After Modlets were used to track energy use, it was discovered that the soda machine was using more energy than other appliances. Following this discovery, all university vending machines were contracted to have vending misers, which can save up to 46% of energy use
Working with Facilities Management to installing new heat valves in Sage Hall The new valves to control heat settings have saved 46% of steam purchased, and greatly increased comfort level
Working with New England Conservation Services to provide free-low-cost home weatherization audits to members of our community  Students that participated in the program received a service valued at $700 for free or at a reduced price. These audits can save $200 in energy costs annually.

Initative Spotlight: Weatherization of Marsh Hall (#WinterIsComing)

The ESC ran a student run building audit and weatherization for Marsh Hall, one of the older buildings at F&ES. Participating students learned about weatherization techniques to save energy and lower heating costs for the winter.

How can YOU help reduce our energy consumption at YSE?

  • Please remember that most lights (and all lamps) in classrooms, lounges and auditoriums don’t automatically shut off. If you are the last to leave, please turn off the lights!
  • Lights on the third floor of Kroon should be kept off on bright days. The light switches can be found by the BYO counter and by the bathroom.
  • Leaving windows open also has a huge impact on energy use for heating, so if you see an open window, please close it
