This course examines water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs in developing countries. The course will primarily focus on drinking water and sanitation interventions. Students will study the roles of major international organizations alongside domestic policies. Students will critically evaluate the evidence base for WASH interventions using both randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational methods, assessing the strengths and limitations of each approach. Readings draw from peer-reviewed academic articles and policy documents. Additional topics include financing mechanisms for WASH programs, equity concerns, and the implications of climate change for water security. Students will leave equipped to interpret empirical evidence and inform real-world WASH policy and program decisions.
