Financial Aid, Student Employment & Taxes

The Office of Admissions and Financial Aid processes applications for financial aid, including loans, and counsel students on matters related to financial aid. The Office of Financial Aid can be reached at financialaid.yse@yale.edu or 203-432-5106.

Our commitment to diversity and access means our goal is to bring the most promising students into our graduate programs, regardless of financial circumstances. Eighty percent of our master’s students receive financial assistance.

The Office of Admissions and Financial Aid is committed to:

  • Assisting you in understanding our programs and the resources and options available to you;
  • Flexibility and concern in responding to individual circumstances and special needs, consistent with the guidelines of our general policies;
  • Protecting the confidentially of the information you provide us; and
  • Doing the best to notify you of any changes in federal programs and YSE policies.
Please see the Funding Your Master’s Degree pages for more information.

Tuition, Fees and Other Expenses

The cost of attendance is an estimate of the expenses a single student may expect to incur to attend the School as a full-time Master’s student in the fall and spring semesters. Please note that the following figures are for the 9-month academic year

External Funding

We strongly encourage you to research and apply for external funding. Our resources are limited, and we are unable to meet the full demonstrated financial need of all our applicants. The opportunities that you will find may provide the supplemental funding that you need to bridge the gap between any aid that we may offer and the full cost of attending the School.

Student Employment

Students interested in working at the School or greater Yale have a plethora of options to choose from. There are many on-campus positions that do not require work study funding but still allow students to earn money for work performed on campus.

Loans

Visas for International Students

Matriculating students are contacted in the spring by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid and the Yale Office of International Students and Scholars regarding the procedure and requirements to obtain a visa. Students must be able to provide documentation that they have the necessary funding available to pay for both years of their education. The deadline to submit all required documentation to the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid is May 15, 2024.

Taxes

Please be aware that University policy prohibits staff members from providing income tax advice or assistance. Since tax laws are very complex and may apply differently in individual circumstances, please consult your accountant, tax advisor, or a representative of the Internal Revenue Service in order to ensure proper compliance.

However, the Yale University Tax Compliance and Planning Office does provide a tax guide for graduate and professional students and the Office of International Students and Scholars has information on understanding your U.S. tax obligations.
