Office of Career and Professional Development

The YSE Office of Career and Professional Development (CPD) helps students connect with summer experiences and post-graduate career opportunities at employers seeking top talent across all of YSE’s specializations.  Through personal, individualized strategy development, the CPD assists students in using all parts of their YSE experience for maximum career growth and impact, including development of a strong network in each person’s professional community of practice.

Each year CPD facilitates opportunities to meet, interview, and network with a broad group of employers and alumni. The office is open to YSE masters and doctoral students and alumni. Students’ spouses and significant others may seek assistance in local job searches. Among the services and resources CPD provides are:

Professional Skills Modules

The Professional Skills Modules (PSMs) provide students with opportunities to strengthen their proficiency in core areas considered essential to all professionals, including those focused on environmental management.
Each workshop is open to all YSE students, although if space is limited, MEM students will be given preference, as they are required to take at least four of the eight workshops prior to graduation.  The MEM5 students are required to take at least two of the eight workshops prior to graduation.

ENV 006: Summer Internship / Research

Required for all masters students 0 Credits.
The summer internship or research project is the opportunity for students to apply knowledge and skills gained during their first year of study, to gain professional experience, build networks, and to investigate potential career paths first-hand.

The course consists of a research project or internship experience between 10 and 12 weeks, between the summer of first and second year of the program.  Students have latitude in designing a summer practicum closely aligned with individual academic and career goals.  Students are responsible for securing their own internship or developing a relevant research project with appropriate faculty supervision, applying for and securing their own summer funding, and filing appropriate paperwork with the Office of Career and Professional Development before and after the internship or research experience in order to receive course credit.
