Sustainability Initiatives

YSE-IT fully supports and encourages the sustainability initiatives implemented by the school and the university, and continually reviews equipment and computing practices to determine how to reduce consumable, energy costs and general waste resulting from the use of electronic equipment.

In cooperation with the YSE Environmental Stewardship Committee, YSE-IT is working to reduce the number of printers throughout the school while maintaining reliability and dependability of our printing capacity

Computers

To reduce energy use, please turn off your monitor when you leave the office.  Setting your monitor to sleep, hibernation, or screen saver saves far less energy than turning off the power completely.  Plug your peripheral devices like chargers, printers, speakers, and scanners into a power strip, and turn it off when you leave the office for the day. These devices are using power (aka phantom load) even when they are in stand-by mode!  For help configuring your settings, and for suggestions on power strips to help reduce phantom load, contact the YSE-IT Department at helpdesk.yse@yale.edu.

Printers and Copiers

Printers and copiers are often left on for long periods of time when not in use – this means wasted energy!
Copiers at Kroon are configured to enter a sleep state after 30-60 minutes of inactivity.  Simply pressing Power will wake the copier and ready it for use. Even if it is in a sleep state, the copier will still accept your print job.  Kroon copiers are also capable of scanning and emailing documents! Instructions are posted at the copier.  If your office does not print remotely, you can conserve even more energy by shutting down all copy room equipment every night.
